Lavaux: a spectacular cultural landscape with UNESCO classification
Between Lausanne and Montreux, over more than 800 hectares, you will find the home of the Chasselas: the terraced vineyards of Lavaux. As early as the 12th century, the Cistercian monks built terraces delimiting tiny plots of land that plunge dizzyingly into Lake Geneva. It is hard to imagine today the immense amount of work that went into cultivating and maintaining this steep landscape; over the years, more than 450 kilometers of walls had to be built to create more than 10,000 terraces! This unique heritage is a testimony to the genius and perseverance of mankind and is now classified as a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Chasselas: king of grapes
In the canton of Vaud, when one orders “three decis” of white wine, needless to say… It is inevitably chasselas that ends up in the glasses. Once considered a light aperitif wine, it is now renowned as a terroir wine with exceptional qualities and stands out on the menus of the greatest tables in Switzerland.
It is here, on the shores of Lake Geneva, that it was born in the 17th century. And since then, it has blossomed, developed and diversified! In Switzerland, it is grown to be vinified, tasted and shared with guests. Tasting a Chasselas is more than just drinking wine. It is a sensory experience linked to a part of Switzerland’s identity and culture.
