Region
More than 90% of the agricultural area of Valposchiavo –the Italian-speaking valley in Graubünden– is cultivated and maintained by certified organic farms. The 100% Valposchiavo label was introduced to promote its local products. Valposchiavo has a one-of-a-kind terroir between glaciers and a mild Mediterranean climate, it enjoys an exceptional climatic diversity, with variations in altitude of over 2000 meters from the Bernina Pass to Campocologno on the border with Italy.
Long cut off from the world, the valley can be reached by crossing the Bernina Pass with the legendary Rhaetian Railway. This magical route is considered one of the wonders of the Alpine world and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. It takes two hours to get from Tirano on the Italian side to St. Moritz or Chur, two hours of steep climbing, on one of the steepest lines in the world without rack gears, with breath-taking views.
We slide little by little from a landscape of glaciers and waterfalls, with the Piz Palü culminating at 3900 meters at an altitude of 400 meters, at the borders of Italy, allowing the cultivation of olive trees, fig trees, orchards, and vineyards all bunched up tightly. You will pass the famous Brusio spiral viaduct, the crystalline lake of Poschiavo, an unreal splendour at an altitude of 1,000 meters, and the village of the same name, the capital of the valley.
This climatic and geographical diversity has given Valposchiavo an unprecedented terroir and products, combining south and north, livestock, cheese and dairy typical of the Alpine valleys and pasta or polenta specialties reminiscent of Italy, a rare diversity of vegetables, fruits, berries, and cereals.
Featured project
100% natural agriculture: olive trees at the foot of the glaciers
Valposchiavo is rich in agriculture. The region has chosen to enhance its unique heritage by focusing on sustainable development. A reflection initiated in 2012 resulted in the conversion of almost the entire valley to organic farming.
The 100% Valposchiavo label was created to promote and encourage local production and processing chains. The project, which has received several awards, is the result of collaboration between all sectors of agriculture, food processing and catering, with the aim of producing a sustainable and local chain with high value-added.
