ERSTSTOCKBEIZLI
Looking for a unique restaurant? Then the charming Erststockbeizli in St. Gallen’s Old Town are just what you’re looking for. Erststockbeizli are traditional restaurants and wine taverns located on the second floor of historic half-timbered houses that were once the beating heart of medieval life. Today, they are a well-kept secret, offering you and your loved ones a unique culinary experience.
The history of these unique beizli dates back to a time when the soil in St. Gallen was still damp and marshy. The half-timbered houses were therefore built on sturdy wooden piles. While the dark first floor was used for livestock breeding and commerce, the brighter second floor became a place of leisure and conviviality. Today, you can enjoy the warm atmosphere of the Erststockbeizli, created by the low wooden walls and well-preserved Gothic ceiling beams. What’s more, from the second floor you can watch the hustle and bustle of the squares and alleyways while enjoying a delicious meal.
