WINES
Did you know that vines have been grown in the Principality of Liechtenstein for over 2000 years? It was the Romans who introduced the first vines to the country. Since then, the foehn wind and the centuries of experience of local winegrowers have produced some excellent wines – from Chardonnay to Riesling and Pinot Noir.
Liechtenstein has four professional winegrowers. Harry Zech runs the Cantine in Schaanwald, Liechtenstein’s first and only biodynamic winery. All his wines from the 2017 vintage onwards are certified to Demeter specifications.
The Castellum wine estate on Eschnerberg dates back to 1983. It is located on the magnificent Eschnerberg and produces red wines, white wines, rosé wines, sweet wines and brandies. The winery also produces winegrower’s cheese, winegrower’s sausages and elderflower syrup.
The range offered by Weinbau Hoop in Eschen includes simple, light local wines, elegant white wines, strong red wines, various liqueurs and brandies, and sparkling wines.
But the best known is undoubtedly the Cellar of the Princely Court of Vaduz. It offers a good overview as well as oenological rarities that can be tasted and purchased. Thanks to its location, it is on the list of many short-stay visitors, and is often visited for a tasting session as part of a tour of Liechtenstein.
REGIONAL WINES IN RESTAURANTS
Naturally, many Liechtenstein restaurants offer local wines on their wine lists. So if you’re travelling along the Liechtenstein-Weg, you can always stop off and sample one of these wines.
LIECHTENSTEIN WINEGROWERS’ FESTIVALS
In autumn, Liechtenstein’s winegrowers present their products at various events: for example, at the wine festival of the Triesen winegrowers’ cooperative near the historic chapel of St. Mamerten, and at the Unterland winegrowers’ festival with the crowning of the wine queen.
The best winegrowers in the country present their own productions, and the wide range on offer often surprises visitors.

CHEESE
Blöderkäse AOP / Sauerkäse AOP is a cheese speciality typical of the region, made from skimmed cow’s milk.
Blöderkäse AOP (also known as Bloderchäs) and sour cheese AOP (Surchäs or Surakäs) are the same cheese with different degrees of ripeness. While Blöderkäse is matured for a maximum of 21 days, Sauerkäse is stored for 60 days.
WHERE CAN YOU TASTE IT?
Several producers still make this delicious cheese today.

Liechtenstein has a long tradition of beekeeping, which has been influenced by the development of agriculture.
