JOURNEY TO THE MIDDLE AGES
In 1476, Bonvillars witnessed a famous battle between Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and the Confederates. Several buildings open to the public bear witness to the history that shaped the region.
The Château de Bonvillars, a medieval fortress overlooking Lake Neuchâtel since the 11th century, is the second largest castle in Switzerland. It houses the prestigious treasure left by Charles the Bold after his defeat. A new museum will open in 2026. Until then, the monument remains open to the public and can be visited.
In addition to a visit to the Château, take the time to stroll through the medieval streets of Bonvillars for a real trip back in time! It’s impossible not to visit the magnificently restored Romanesque church dating from the 11th century.
You can also choose to follow in the footsteps of Charles the Bold from the Château de Bonvillars. Along the way, winegrowers welcome walkers with a thirst for history and fine wines. At the end of the route, you can admire the thousand-year-old menhirs just before the village of Concise. It was in this charming village that the Swiss defeated Charles the Bold… and where this journey ends.
